Air plant or air plants is the common name for Tillandsia.
We call them air plants because they don't need soil; they feed on tiny vessels in their leaves, called trichomes, which capture nutrients and moisture from the air.
Growth: Slow
Watering: Every one to two weeks, soak your air plant in room-temperature tap water for 5 to 10 minutes. As a general rule, the more sun the plant receives, the more moisture it should be.
Humidity: ++
Exposure: Direct/indirect sun
Difficulty: Beginner
Tips & Tricks: After soaking, gently shake off any excess water from your plant. Turn it upside down and place it on a towel in a bright spot. It is very important that the air plant dries quickly, otherwise it may rot if left wet for too long. The plant should be completely dry within 1 to 3 hours.
Air plants only bloom once in their lifetime! Depending on the species, flowering can last from one day to several months. The flowers are usually a beautiful pink, red, or purple. Flowering is the peak of the air plant's life cycle. After flowering, the plant will eventually die.
But don't despair! Just before, during, or after flowering, depending on the species, your air plant will reproduce by sending out 2 to 8 "babies." These little air plants, which start out very small, will eventually become their own mother plants. The babies can be safely separated from the mother plant when they are about â to ½ the size of the mother plant. Be careful not to remove them too soon, as they are actually receiving nutrients from the mother air plant!
